Josep Borrell

The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, described this Tuesday as a "good initiative" to "approximate positions" between the government and the Venezuelan opposition, for the sake of "inclusive" presidential elections, the meeting sponsored the day before by himself and the presidents of Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and France, although "there were not many agreements."

The Venezuelan government was represented at that meeting by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, and the opposition by the head of the Unitary Platform delegation, Gerardo Blyde.

In the opinion of the head of European diplomacy, the meeting held on the sidelines of the first day of the summit of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), "was a good initiative, it was good that the problem was put on the table".

"It was an attempt to bring positions between the government and the opposition closer to see how presidential elections could be held that would be inclusive, democratic, acceptable to the international community and to Venezuelans," Borrell told reporters upon arrival at a meeting of European and Latin American social democratic leaders in Brussels prior to the second day of the EU-Celac summit.

The Spanish politician opined that "Venezuela cannot miss the opportunity to make those elections."

However, he added that "the problem is how to advance simultaneously in the progressive lifting of sanctions by the United States."

However, the high representative said "to be willing to help in whatever way possible."

In addition to Borrell and the representatives of the Venezuelan government and opposition, the meeting was attended by the presidents Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Alberto Fernández (Argentina), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil) and Emmanuel Macron (France), as well as the high representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell.

The objective of this meeting was "to reacclimatize a process that allows a democratic agreement to be reached through dialogue between the different factions of Venezuelan society," Petro explained to the Colombian press before the meeting.
