[Politics] Unite union hands hotel contract probe to police

Two reports into how funds were spent at Labour's biggest union backer Unite have been handed to the police, after uncovering "potential criminality".

The inquiries were ordered by the union's most senior official, Sharon Graham, who was elected as general secretary last year.

Unite said it was committed to "holding anyone responsible to account".

A senior KC - Martin Bowdery - had been investigating the contract to build a hotel and office complex in Birmingham.

The contract had been approved by the previous general secretary Len McCluskey and the union's executive.

Unite sources are suggesting the property may be worth up to £30m less than was paid to build it.

The complex, which is now complete, houses Unite's regional headquarters, as well as a 170-bed hotel and 1,000 person conference centre. It is thought to have cost more than £90m.

Mr McCluskey had previously suggested it was "a smear" to question the project and last year said the hotel complex "will be a powerful resource for working people for many years to come, and will stand as a monument to Unite's financial strength and commitment to its members".

The project had been overseen by independent surveyors and architects.
