[News] Iran carries out the second death sentence in connection with the protests

On Monday, the Iranian authorities carried out the second execution in connection with the protest movement that erupted 3 months ago in response to the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini, while she was in the custody of the morality police.

 

 

The "Mizan Online" website of the Iranian judiciary stated that a court in the northeastern city of Mashhad sentenced Majid Reza Rahnavard (23 years) to death, after he was convicted of killing two members of the security forces by stabbing with a knife and wounding 4 others. She explained that he was hanged publicly in the city and not inside the prison.

On Thursday, the Iranian authorities executed Mohsen Shakkari, 23, who was convicted of wounding a member of the Basij forces and blocking a road at the beginning of the protest movement.

Protests have been rocking Iran for about 3 months, following the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police on charges of violating the dress code for women in the Islamic Republic.

The director of Iran Human Rights Organization, Mahmoud Amiri Moghadam, indicated that Rahnavard was "sentenced to death based on coerced confessions after a highly unfair process and mock trial."

It is expected that the European Union will impose new sanctions on Iran, against the backdrop of what the West describes as "the suppression of protesters, as well as Russia's supply of drones used in the war against Ukraine."

The French Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, "France condemns in the strongest terms today's public execution of an Iranian who is on death row after participating in the demonstrations."
