The Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, called on Tuesday for the impeachment of Democratic President Joe Biden with the aim of removing him, in a move that the White House denounced, saying that it was “politically motivated” a year before the presidential elections.

 

 

McCarthy told Congress, “I ask a committee in the House of Representatives to launch formal investigations into the existence of grounds for impeaching Biden,” noting that the Democratic president “lied” to the American people about his son’s controversial actions abroad.

McCarthy said that Republicans in the House of Representatives had revealed “serious and credible allegations about the behavior of President Biden,” whom he accused of fueling a “culture of corruption.”

McCarthy - who was forced to compromise with the right wing of the party to win the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives - said, "The allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption against Biden require further investigation by the House of Representatives."

But a spokesman for McCarthy said - today, Tuesday - that the US House of Representatives is not expected to vote on the impeachment investigation with the aim of removing Biden.

Republicans - who now narrowly control the House of Representatives - accused Biden of profiting while serving as Vice President from 2009 to 2017 from the foreign business ventures of his son Hunter Biden, but they did not provide evidence to prove this.

A former business partner of Biden's son said - during a House of Representatives hearing - that Hunter Biden "sold the illusion of being close to power" while his father was vice president, according to a text issued last month.

Hunter's business dealings, when his father was vice president under Barack Obama, were a frequent target of Republicans, but no credible evidence has yet emerged that the current president is involved in anything illegal.

The White House denounces
The White House immediately denounced the announcement, saying that it was “politically motivated” a year before the presidential elections.

White House spokesman Ian Sams said, “House Republicans investigated the president for 9 months, and found no evidence of any wrongdoing.”

Sams added, in a post on the Council members.

The White House spokesman described the call to impeach Biden as extremist politics at its worst.

Democratic representatives denounced this step, saying that it was a purely partisan practice aimed at retaliation for the double impeachment attempt made by the House of Representatives against former Republican President Donald Trump.
