[Animals] Two defendants sent to prison for clandestine slaughterhouse and receipt of a stolen car in Cartagena

he Guarantee Court of San Antonio decreed this Wednesday the precautionary measure of preventive detention for Abraham Enrique Rojas Basualto and Enrique Alberto Cubillos Varas, accused as perpetrators of the completed crimes of animal abuse, clandestine slaughterhouses and receipt of a motor vehicle.

These crimes were revealed on Tuesday in the municipality of Cartagena, when personnel from the Second Police Station of that town disrupted a clandestine slaughterhouse that operated in an area in the San Sebastián sector.

In the place there were more than 30 horses, pigs, cows and llamas in deplorable health conditions.

At the formalization hearing, Judge Felipe Contreras ordered the admission of the detainees to the Penitentiary Compliance Center (CCP) of San Antonio, considering their freedoms a danger to the security of society.

"According to the information handled and which is still under investigation by the San Antonio Public Ministry, the accused were found in a property in which there were various animal species in a deplorable state of health. Also, in the same property, They found parts of deceased animals and, likewise, tools from a slaughterhouse that, in this case, did not have the respective authorizations," said the magistrate.

He added that "a motor vehicle that was charged with theft" was also found.

Prosecutor Francisco Martínez had requested preventive detention for both defendants "in response to the diversity of crimes for which the investigation has been formalized and also a possible risk of flight."

From the defense of those arrested, lawyer Hernán Solís asserted that his clients, at the time of being surprised by Carabineros, "were working, at that moment, making a construction wall", ruling out their participation in the crimes.

"The same neighbors, in different media, pointed out that the people who were in charge of the property and who transported the animals, who brought them in, who took them out, who fed them, were a couple. In addition, they pointed out that this marriage constantly came and went, who is probably from Santiago".

"A neighboring neighbor said that he knew them, that they are a married couple and he doesn't know these people," the jurist continued.

Finally, the judge set the investigation period for the case at 80 days.
