[Hardware] We explain in a simple way how Intel organizes its processors

First of all, when we talk about processor architecture, we are referring to their design. Intel normally combines several processor architectures for different segments. By segments we were referring to markets, meaning desktop computers, laptops, low-consumption systems or servers, among others.

In order to differentiate the segment to which each architecture goes, Intel adds a letter or two at the end. These give us a lot of information, more than you can imagine. This is precisely what we are going to explain to you, what these letters mean and how to interpret them.

Intel and the segmentation of its architectures

We are going to take the 13th Generation of Intel processors as a reference. We chose this generation because all the product ranges are on the market, while the current one (14th Generation) is still in the launch phase.

These are the identifiers and the segments they are intended for:

Raptor Lake-S: these are processors intended for desktop computers. Within this range we find those that offer the greatest number of cores and frequencies and the TDP is usually 45W, 65W and 125W

Raptor Lake-HX: These processors are used exclusively in high-end laptops. One of the characteristics of some of these processors is that they can support overclocking, although it is not recommended.

Raptor Lake-H: They are intended for mid-range and entry-level gaming laptops. Although they focus on laptops, some mid-range or high-end Mini PCs can integrate them

Raptor Lake-P: they are called “performance” by Intel, which indicates a balance between consumption and performance. They are usually seen on mid-range or high-end laptops, but not focused on gaming, but rather on productivity.

Raptor Lake-U: the latter are the most efficient processors for mid-range and entry-level laptops. They usually have, at most, two power cores with very low frequencies, seeking to offer good performance associated with great autonomy.

As far as laptop processors go, it's simple. At the end of the name always add the letters of the branch to which it belongs. For example, we have the Core i9-13950HX, which is a processor for very high-end gaming laptops. The same would happen with the rest of the laptop processors. Furthermore, the first two numbers after the hyphen tell us the family, in this case it is a processor belonging to the 13th Generation, called by Intel as Raptor Lake.

The only exception is in desktop processors, which use other identifying letters. Here come the Core-K, Core-KF, Core-F Core-T and those without letters. It does not use the Core-S identifier because for desktops it only offers one product range, while for laptops it has four ranges. Actually, after dinner they segment it in a very different way because they are interested in doing it that way.
