[Politics] The Wall Street Journal: A defining moment for Ukraine

Western governments credit themselves for helping Ukraine resist a Russian invasion, and they certainly deserve some credit for that. But as the first anniversary of the war approaches, a new moment of decision also looms: Will the United States and Europe let the war continue in a frightful stalemate? Or will you provide enough military assistance to help Ukraine regain its lands and win the war?

Unspoken but looming, as the Wall Street Journal writes, Ukraine's allies meet Friday in Germany for their decisions to determine the terms of the war on the Ukrainian side for the rest of the winter and beyond.

AFP - US M1A1 Abrams tanks are loaded onto a train during the Army Preposition Stocks operation drill at Camp Carroll in Chilgok, about 290 kms (180 miles) southeast of Seoul on March 5, 2009. The drill is part of the annual Key Resolve/Foal Eagle military exercises by the US and South

The newspaper pointed to the fact that Vladimir Putin shows no sign of giving up despite his humiliating setbacks, and believes that as the war continues he can outpace Western support for Kiev, where much of Ukraine remains under his control.

She commented that this may be true if Ukraine cannot take advantage of its gains in the last half of 2022 and regain its lands soon. It is clear that the Ukrainians have the will to continue fighting, but they need more and better weapons than the West has provided so far.

The newspaper described Germany's reluctance to agree to provide "Leopard" tanks to Ukraine unless the United States provided it with "Abrams" tanks, as well as the Biden administration's leak that the assistance it plans to announce this week would not include these tanks or the Himars long-range tactical missile system, as a manifestation. Bewilderingly cowardly, the White House apparently fears that the war will escalate if Putin continues to lose control.

The newspaper concluded that Ukraine must be helped to quickly win more weapons and cancel US restrictions on the way Ukraine wages war, because this long and ugly stalemate in Ukraine will put Russia in a position to threaten its neighbors for years to come, and that will be more costly to the United States and Europe, and then The praise for Ukraine's help will turn into well-deserved harsh criticism if the war continues and Russia wins this bloody war of attrition.
