The Regional Directorate of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) filed a complaint for animal abuse with the Regional Prosecutor's Office after images of a group of people hitting and killing a couple of sharks that had been killed with a large stone went viral. captured in Queilén, in Chiloé.

Sernapesca Los Lagos invoked the Animal Protection Law for the crime of capturing and mistreating a hydrobiological species, in this case two seven-gill sharks.

The complaint originated after receiving background information on the case.

The regional director of Sernapesca, Branny Montecinos, indicated that "the transit of this species on the coasts of the region is common.

Sharks are not a protected species, but they correspond to hydrobiological species that have management measures for their protection."

"Any capture of fishing species must be done by people registered in a registry, in addition to having the authorized species and with a regulated fishing gear. Clearly the situation we see is far from this," added the director.

The regional authority explained that the sanctions are contemplated in Law 20,380 and Article 299 of the Penal

Code. These range from minor prison to a minimum to medium degree and also fines ranging from two to 30 UTM (up to 1.8 million pesos).
