The M4A4 Howl is one of the most iconic Counter-Strike skins and copyright is to blame.

La skin de Counter-Strike que vale miles de euros por culpa de un jugador que estafó a Valve: Le robaron a un artista y engañaron a toda la comunidad de Global Offensive

That a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skin has an exorbitant price no longer surprises us. Even less now that the announcement of its next big update has triggered interest. However, there is some logic in the market. The most expensive products fulfill three characteristics: they are rare, there is a high demand and they belong to the most used weapons. It's something that Valve can control by different means. At least, almost always, because one of the most expensive skins in the game is due to a player who managed to cheat the company.

A copyright issue in Counter-Strike
Valve does not design the skins that later make it to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In most cases, the developer adds community-created cosmetics that have been previously featured in the Workshop. The process is simple: artists upload their creations here and submit to the opinion of other players. When your cosmetics are po[CENSORED]r or noticed by a Valve developer, they are included in the game via lootbox for an undisclosed amount. There is a lot of secrecy regarding the subject, since the artists sign a non-disclosure agreement.

The only time Valve directly confirmed what it was paying for skins was a few months ago. Preparing for the 10th anniversary of Global Offensive, the company hosted a contest urging the community to submit their creations. The prize for the 17 winners was an immediate payment of $100,000 in exchange for the cosmetic being included in a future box (Dreams & Nightmares). We can intuit that the payment is higher than usual. However, the goal is not to try to find out the exact number. Rather, it's about understanding what these kinds of amounts of money are that many people are willing to do anything for.

Skin Dreeams Nights

This situation resulted in a community member stealing a design from another artist and adding it to the Counter-Strike Workshop. The cosmetic was quickly among the most voted, managing to maintain an average of five full stars after 4,550 ratings. I was really liking it, Valve had seen it, and there probably wasn't a system for filtering content as polished as there is today. So in 2014 he ended up adding the M4A4 Howl to the video game. He did it in the so-called Huntsman Weapon Case. This box was released on May 8, 2014 with 17 cosmetics, six of which were removed on June 11 of that same year (via Counter-Strike Wiki).

The M4A4 Howl caused an unprecedented change in CS:GO
The M4A4 Howl was a weapon in red tones that included the figure of a wolf on the side. According to the artist who added it to Counter-Strike, it was a design based on his dog. "I wanted to do an interesting illustration, so I created this. It's based on a photo of my dog. It's sort of making fun of him, because he's the antithesis of a wolf." The reality is that, although we cannot verify if he had a dog or not, we do know that the design of the weapon was not based on that supposed quadruped. Instead, it was a direct theft from Finnish artist CanisAlbus, who specializes in animals and nature. Accompanying this stolen portrait, there were just a few scratches that gave a sensational finish to the weapon in question.

Howl Original Vs Robada

When the original author found out, he complained about the situation and reported his art stolen. This led to a reaction from Valve, who immediately made the decision to replace six of the skins available in the box. The ones removed were both the M4A4 Howl and the other five cosmetics added to the collection that they had taken from that same artist. With the latter there were not too many problems, because they were original. It was a matter of replacing them with others for future openings of the 'lootbox' and reporting the changes. However, this wolf-inspired skin put the developer in a difficult situation.

Some players had paid a lot of money to get the M4A4 Howl. Although one of the AK-47 skins that many players like the most (Vulcan) was available in the box, this M4A4 Howl was one of the main spending arguments for the community and they could not simply take it away from those who had obtained it. In this sense, they reached an agreement with the original artist to alter the design trying to preserve the personality of the weapon. Made some slight modifications and changed its rarity category. Instead of being a normal cosmetic, it would be contraband. This meant that it would never again be available through official means.

M4a4 Howl

Everyone who had an M4A4 Howl hit the jackpot. Existing units of the skin would never increase, and after only a month, there weren't too many copies. Also, the story gave rise to some mysticism from the community. It became more attractive thanks to Valve's design change and its strange history, becoming one of the most desired items in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. It is currently one of the most expensive cosmetics that exist in the video game. Its sale price is estimated at about $8,800 if it does not have any additions. However, depending on the stickers that it has incorporated, it can exceed 250,000.
