SnO
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held talks with heads of other parties to discuss a proposed constitutional amendment that would give the prime minister more political powers. Meloni said of her plans to amend the constitution after talks with opposition party representatives late on Tuesday that electing the prime minister by direct vote would ensure the stability of the government. The opposition criticized the expansion of the prime minister's powers at the expense of the country's president, who enjoys a great deal of influence under the Italian constitution in government talks or the appointment of ministers. Although Meloni is open to other proposals from the opposition, she made it clear that she prefers her plans for the amendment, as she believes that it would enhance political stability in the country. Since Italy's defeat in World War II, about 70 governments have assumed power in Italy. Meloni stressed after the talks that it is important for her to implement an amendment with a large majority. She pointed out that the meeting on Tuesday is the first discussion. Social Democratic House of Representatives member Ellie Schlein criticized the proposal, and made it clear that an amendment was necessary, but it should not be limited to making "a man or a woman at the helm of power." According to former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the powers of the prime minister must be strengthened, but within a "balanced framework that does not undermine the parliamentary model". Conte added that the "main function" of the President of the Republic must be preserved in particular as "the guarantor of national cohesion," as he put it. https://www.aljazeera.net/news/2023/5/10/ميلوني-تناقش-مع-الأحزاب-تعديلا
