Guest High King Eslam
Today (Saturday), Turkey rejected the criticism of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding the conversion of the "Hagia Sophia" cathedral into a mosque, describing it as "biased and political," according to Agence France-Presse. Last year, Turkey converted the Hagia Sophia cathedral into a mosque, which angered the international community. The cathedral, which dates back to the Byzantine era, was converted into a museum in 1934. A month later, Ankara ordered the conversion of another Orthodox church into a mosque, the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora, which was built in the Byzantine era and decorated with frescoes dating back to the fourteenth century. The Turkish authorities had turned it into a museum before the final decision. Yesterday (Friday), UNESCO asked Turkey to provide it with a report by the beginning of next year on the status of "Hagia Sophia", expressing its "grave concern" about the repercussions of this decision. And she expressed her "deep regret at the absence of any dialogue or information" about Turkey's intention to change the status of the Hagia Sophia and Khora museums. Turkey's foreign ministry said it "rejects the decisions of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee on Istanbul's historical sites, which are clearly biased, biased and political." She added that the Hagia Sophia and the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora are state property, and they are being protected "carefully", accusing the United Nations of "violating" Turkish sovereignty.
