Northern Syria - Traveling on a homemade motorcycle, the Syrian nurse, Ali Houmed, continues to provide medical services to needy patients in the countryside of Aleppo, northwestern Syria, despite the amputation of his right leg during the war in his country.

سوريا - ريف حلب - لم تمنع الإعاقة الممرض السوري الخمسيني علي حومد من خدمة المرضى وتقديم ما يحتاجونه من متابعة طبية.

Early in the morning, Houmed (52 years old) sets out from the camp he lives in in the town of Nayyara in the countryside of Aleppo, leaning on a metal chair for the elderly and people with disabilities, carrying his medical bag in order to visit patients in the areas near his place of residence.

Houmed visits a number of patients and injured to provide the treatment they need, such as installing serum devices, suturing and sterilizing wounds, and injecting needles, in addition to measuring blood pressure and sugar levels, and urgent emergency services.

Medicine dream
Houmed’s grades in his high school studies did not enable him to enter the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Aleppo, as he had dreamed of when he was young, but his attachment and passion for this humanitarian profession in the first place - as he describes it - made him go to study nursing in one of the intermediate health institutes in Aleppo, to feel as if he had achieved part of his dream.

After his graduation, Houmed worked in hospitals and medical centers in the city of Aleppo, including Al-Razi Governmental Hospital, where he gained good medical experience in the nursing field over the years, and gained a good reputation as one of the skilled nurses in the city.

In addition to his work in hospitals, the nurse offered his experience to patients and injured people in Aleppo, in order to alleviate their pain and suffering, with his knowledge and expertise in the medical field.

The nurse and the revolution
With the start of the popular protests in Syria in March 2011, the hardworking nurse supported the young demonstrators in the squares of Syrian cities and their neighborhoods, especially in Aleppo, the capital of northern Syria, where he felt that political change could be achieved.

As a result of the repression and violence that the demonstrators were subjected to by the Syrian security forces at that time, he worked to treat the injured protesters, and provided them with his services, believing that they were right.

Houmed tells Al-Jazeera Net that the memories of the Syrian revolution are mixed with mixed feelings of sadness and joy. Sorrow for the victims who fall from oppression and violence, and joy and elation at breaking the barrier of fear that his generation could not break in the past years.

It did not take long before Houmed lost his leg during the military operations against the "Islamic State" organization in the countryside of Aleppo. Where his leg was exposed to an explosive gunshot in 2014 in the midst of the clashes, and the doctors did not find it necessary to amputate it to save his life.

However, the suffering of the Syrian nurse did not stop at the loss of his leg and the physical and psychological pains, as the man lost his eldest son in the bombing of the countryside of Aleppo, a short period of time after his leg was amputated, which doubled his misery and increased the psychological distress.

Humanitarian work
Despite the amount of pain that Houmed is going through, he did not hesitate in his work to heal the wounds of the Syrians who were exhausted by the disease and are now waiting to extend a helping hand, in a country already suffering from poor medical services and their deterioration as a result of the war and bombing.

Most of the time, the nurse does not charge the fees for his medical services, and forgives the poor for any financial cost.

Many of the people look at Houmed with amazement, and they think that he is the one who needs humanitarian care, and they express their surprise when they see his three-wheeled bicycle as it cruises to the clinic of Syrian patients in the camps and villages.

However, the Syrian nurse in his fifties confirms that he loves humanitarian work and providing aid to the needy, because of his experience and knowledge in the field of medicine and nursing, and he believes that it should be employed in the service of others.
