[LifeStyle] Morocco retrieves a crocodile skull dating back 56 million years

The day before yesterday, at the Rabat Zoo, Mehdi Bensaïd, Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, oversaw a ceremony to present a crocodile skull, which was recovered after being smuggled to the United States, and later seized among 7,000 other artifacts.

This event, according to a statement by the ministry, was an opportunity to highlight the importance of retrieving this skull, which dates back 56 million years.
The process of recovering this artifact falls within the framework of activating the UNESCO Convention of 1970 concerning the measures to be taken to prohibit and prevent the illegal import, export and transfer of ownership of cultural property.
The ministry's statement indicated that Morocco, keen to preserve its national heritage, recovered during the past year 25,000 pieces of geological, archaeological and ethnographic heritage, consisting of a group of great importance belonging to sites from the south of the Kingdom and the Small Atlas, dating back to prehistoric times.
Morocco is one of the rare regions in the world that has much evidence of the deposition of several layers on the surface of the earth, which sheds light on a large part of the main geological times chronicling the stages of the development of life on earth, where the deposits of the “phosphate” series in Morocco are unique in their great richness. With crocodile fossils that enable scientists to know the ancient geographical biodiversity and the evolutionary history of the different species that exist, which explains the interest it arouses in the illegal trade in cultural property.
