Some reports have confirmed that Valve, the owner of the Steam digital platform, has begun a campaign to ban games that contain art assets created by artificial intelligence.

This ban covers all use of AI technologies unless developers can establish their rights over the intellectual property used in the dataset on which the AI was trained to create those assets.

And in a post on the Reddit community and quoting developer Simon Carless' Twitter account, in which a developer previewed an early version of an upcoming game on Steam, it contains some art assets that were clearly created by artificial intelligence, as the developer indicated that they intend to improve them manually. Subsequent updates.

But the game developers have been informed that they will not be able to agree to publish the game via the Steam platform unless they can prove that they own all the necessary rights, as Valve stated to them:

“After review, intellectual property has been identified in [game name] that appears to belong to one or more third parties. Specifically, [name of game] contains AI-generated art assets that appear to be based on copyrighted material owned by third parties.”

Valve added:

“Because the legal ownership of this AI-generated art is not clear, we cannot ship your game unless you positively confirm that you own the rights to all the intellectual property used in the dataset that the AI was trained to create your in-game assets.”

Valve has made it clear to the developers that it will reject the current build of the game, and will give the developer only one opportunity to remove all content in which it does not have ownership rights before re-submitting it for the last time, but the developer confirmed that it manually optimized the assets, and heavily hid the signs of artificial intelligence. The game was again rejected after its submission, with Valve telling it:

We cannot ship and publish games for which the developer does not have all necessary rights. At the moment, we refuse to distribute your game because it is not clear whether the underlying AI technology used to create the assets has sufficient rights to the training data.”

This Girl Does Not Exist
Artificial intelligence is known to play an important role in the development of video games, as it can be used to create intelligent characters and advanced scenarios. The AI also helps improve the game experience by providing AI improvements to enemies, and auto-generating items, but extracting them from the web has raised copyright issues that didn't previously exist.

Said developer said it was baffled by Valve's decision to reject their game, especially given the availability of some titles on the PC market that clearly use AI-generated assets.

High on Life
The use of artificial intelligence still needs a few years in order to replace developers and artists within the studio, as we have already seen this in some titles such as High on Life that have been criticized in such a matter, where many pieces of art scattered in the player's bedroom were created by Artificial intelligence, with some bugs and strange objects appearing because of this, as well as the game This Girl Does Not Exist, which uses it clearly in the characters, voiceover, and even the story.
