In response to a question about whether Sega was open to such acquisition talks, Sega CEO Shoji Utsumi told Bloomberg, "No, not now," and declined to talk about anything that might happen or has already happened between the two companies regarding this potential acquisition.

Sega has a close relationship with Microsoft, as its Creative Assembly studio worked on titles such as Halo Wars 2 and Age of Empires 4, and in 2021 the Japanese company announced a strategic alliance that will see the development of games using Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.

“Utsumi” added that the company is very close to Microsoft and has a great relationship with the management team, and for Microsoft in particular, it has great respect for Sega, according to what the CEO said.

On more than one occasion, Phil Spencer has publicly expressed interest in acquiring an Asian game developer, particularly a Japanese studio, as publisher Square Enix was also the target of that acquisition wave in 2019, legal documents revealed this week.
