Kiev - Hundreds of thousands of residents of the coastal city of Odessa in southern Ukraine were destined to spend the night - yesterday, Monday - without water or electricity. The recent large-scale Russian bombing of energy facilities and other vital infrastructure caused them the greatest damage yesterday, compared to 13 other areas that were bombed.

Odessa is only the last episode in the series of bombing that has become periodic on these facilities, which deprives - to this day - no less than 10 million people from electricity and water supplies, and related heating services, communications and the Internet, i.e. cutting off about a third of the remaining A resident of Ukraine.

However, the remaining percentage of the population lives in a new difficult reality as well, albeit less bleak, as the electricity is cut off periodically, for periods ranging between two and 8 hours, or in an emergency for much longer periods, and without specific timetables, after the bombing killed about 60 % of power plants in the country.

Colder than the flames of war
All of this coincides with the onset of winter, and temperatures across the country dropping below zero, down to minus 10 degrees in some areas, which many see as harsher than the fires of the war itself.

This is because the cold has entered all homes during the past week, and threatens to be a heavy permanent guest on them, if the bombing of energy facilities continues.

New lifestyle
All of the above is clearly reflected in the lifestyle of Ukrainians, which is now being organized - at home and at work - on the basis of power outages, which in turn stopped most electrical means of transportation, caused many traffic accidents, and also canceled many of the habits of previous life, and even its necessary needs.

In one of the residential buildings in the capital, Kyiv, Mrs. Ludmila, 72, told Al-Jazeera Net, "I am afraid to leave my house, so that I do not have to climb the stairs until the ninth floor if the elevator stops; many of my neighbors got stuck in it without warning. And if I had to buy food or medicine Ask the neighbors for it, or I will be hungry and in pain until the next day.”

And she adds, "I am not the only one who suffers; I look at the street. A mother does not dare to go out and take a walk with her baby carriage, for the same reasons."

In this context, a new phenomenon has spread in many residential building elevators, whereby residents leave a box containing some water, food, and other necessities, to help the "stuck" to endure long hours of waiting before the electricity returns, or to get them out.

In the same context, young Anton told Al-Jazeera Net, "Our mobile phones have turned into lamps, and attending all the World Cup matches that we waited for has become a luxury and an unattainable dream. We thank God, because many women and children are outside the country, and they do not live in this reality."

Ukraine publishes resilience points
This reality concerns everyone, especially since winter is still in its early days, and the coming season may be more severe and more dangerous, in light of officials’ calls and “hints” of the need to “leave the cities” and resort to the warmth of firewood in the villages.

As for the authorities, they set up about 4,800 sites in various regions, within schools, universities, police stations, and other public and governmental buildings and headquarters, or even by setting up special tents that they called "resilience points" or "invincible life" points.

These points are equipped with generators to charge phones and operate heaters, as well as water, internet, chairs and even beds, in addition to the availability of some foods and the possibility of drinking hot tea.

Comparisons and regrets
At these points, you realize that the war has repercussed on all groups; The tents - for example - are no longer for the homeless, as was the custom in the past, as they now include nursing mothers and children from school students.

In one of these tents, Mrs. Natalia told Al-Jazeera Net, "All the time, I think about what our situation has become. We did not imagine that this would happen, and that having a paper cup of hot, not tasty tea would make us feel a bit of victory."

And Andrei - who was sitting with 3 of his children in the place - says, "I came only for my children to acclimate to the tent, so that coming would not cause them psychological trauma if things got worse."

Perseverance
The farther we go from the cities in some areas, the conditions are much worse, but there is a strong will to challenge them, to a degree that is difficult to imagine.

In the "Sumoud" tent in the town of "Horenka" on the outskirts of Kyiv, in front of one of the residential buildings that were bombed by the Russians during the months of February and March, we met Mrs. Nadia (68 years), who spoke to Al-Jazeera Net, saying, "My house - now - is like a street. Electricity, water, heating, and gas, all of which will not return soon, as the building was destroyed, and repair is useless.”

She added, "The cold walls give my heart warmth, and I yearn for it from the homes of displacement and asylum, in which I feel humiliated, no matter how well I am treated there."
