Today, Thursday, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed pledged to dismantle all regional paramilitary forces in the country, stressing that the rise of these illegal groups poses a "great danger" to national unity.

And last April, the government began a sudden process of disarming and dismantling forces formed by some states in preparation for integrating its elements into the federal army, police, or civilian life. The decision sparked violent demonstrations in the state of Amhara, and Addis Ababa was accused of trying to weaken the region.

"The dissolution of these special forces comes at the request of parliament and the public interest," Abe told the House of Representatives. "They pose a great danger to national unity... We have seen that in Sudan," he added.

Since April 15, Sudan has been witnessing battles between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has killed more than 2,800 people and displaced more than 2.8 million people.

"There will be no armed forces other than the defense forces, the police and other regular security forces," the Ethiopian prime minister said. "We will continue this process until we ensure that."

Abe stressed that this "does not target the Amhara selectively, as it is alleged, but rather includes all regions," according to what was reported by the French Press Agency.

And the military units that are called “special forces” were formed in violation of the constitution and were allowed to remain until a decision was issued to disarm them, noting that several regional states established them about 15 years ago.

These forces sparked great controversy, especially during the two-year war in the Tigray region, as special forces in Amhara provided strong support to the federal army, but they were also accused of human rights violations.
